Original WWII Dutch NSB photo – Anton Mussert & Franz Eduard Farwerck

The NSB photo is in good condition and shows NSB leader Anton Mussert and Franz Eduard Farwerck.

Franz Eduard Farwerck:

After becoming a member of the National Socialist Movement (NSB) around 1933, he was one of the most influential advisers to Anton Mussert, the leader of the NSB, in the following years. During that period he held various positions at the NSB, the most important of which was that of propaganda leader. He showed himself to be a calm, efficient and dedicated propaganda leader.

In those early years he was the most influential NSB member after Mussert and Van Geelkerken. Incidentally, he has repeatedly complained to Mussert about the anti-Semitic direction that the NSB was taking, because he regarded it as threatening to the ideological pursuit of the NSB, as well as negative for electoral success. After Meinoud Rost van Tonningen joined the NSB in 1936, he and Farwerck would remain enemies. In June 1936 Farwerck became the leader of the group Der Vaderen Erfdeel, which was particularly interested in the archaeological, Germanic, past of the Netherlands. Starting in 1936, this group published the monthly magazine De wolfsangel. The NSB owed the wolfsangel symbol and the ‘popular’ names for the months to Farwerck, such as louuw moon, winter month, and so on.

When in the summer of 1940 there was talk about the establishment of a Dutch Cultural Council, Farwerck was one of the intended members. However, his appointment did not go through, because he was expelled from the NSB in the same period because of an earlier membership of Freemasonry. He had not been an official member of Freemasonry since 1934, but in National Socialist eyes his former membership of the Lodge remained an indelible stain on his blazon. After the SD had searched his home in August 1940 (presumably at the instigation of Rost van Tonningen) and found an incriminating letter, Mussert had no choice but to drop him.

De NSB foto is in goede conditie en daarop zijn NSB leider Anton Mussert en Franz Eduard Farwerck op te zien.

Franz Eduard Farwerck:

Nadat hij rond 1933 lid van de Nationaal-Socialistische Beweging (NSB) was geworden, behoorde hij in de daaropvolgende jaren tot de invloedrijkste adviseurs van Anton Mussert, de leider van de NSB.
In die periode bekleedde hij diverse functies bij de NSB, waarvan de belangrijkste die van propagandaleider was. Hij toonde zich een rustige, efficiënte en toegewijde propagandaleider.

In die beginjaren was hij na Mussert en Van Geelkerken de invloedrijkste NSB’er.
Hij heeft zich bij Mussert overigens meermalen beklaagd over de antisemitische richting die de NSB insloeg, want dat beschouwde hij als bedreigend voor het ideologische streven van de NSB, alsmede negatief voor electoraal succes. Nadat Meinoud Rost van Tonningen in 1936 tot de NSB was toegetreden, zouden Farwerck en hij vijanden blijven. In juni 1936 werd Farwerck de leider van de groep Der Vaderen Erfdeel, die zich in het bijzonder interesseerde voor het archeologische, Germaanse, verleden van Nederland. Deze groep gaf met ingang van 1936 het maandelijks verschijnend tijdschrift De wolfsangel uit. Aan Farwerck dankte de NSB het wolfsangel-symbool en de ‘volkse’ namen voor de maanden als louwmaand, wintermaand, enzovoort.

Toen er in de zomer van 1940 werd gesproken over de instelling van een Nederlandsche Kultuurraad was Farwerck een der beoogde leden. Zijn benoeming ging echter niet door, omdat hij in diezelfde periode uit de NSB werd geroyeerd wegens een vroeger lidmaatschap van de vrijmetselarij. Hij was reeds sinds 1934 geen officieel lid van de vrijmetselarij meer, maar in nationaalsocialistische ogen bleef zijn vroeger lidmaatschap bij de loge een niet uit te wissen smet op zijn blazoen. Nadat in augustus 1940 de SD zijn woning had doorzocht (vermoedelijk op instigatie van Rost van Tonningen) en een belastende brief had gevonden, kon Mussert niet anders dan hem laten vallen.
