Original British WWII aerial photographs relating to the famous Dambusters raid carried out by RAF No. 617 Squadron against the German dams in May 1943.
The two photographs show dams and the surrounding landscape photographed from the air following the famous Operation Chastise.
The reverse bears an old handwritten identification titled ‘The Dam Busters’ together with a reference to Guy Gibson (1918-1944), commander of RAF No. 617 Squadron during the raid.
According to the accompanying inscription, Gibson flew low over the Möhne and Eder dams during the operation and was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions.
Guy Gibson became one of the best-known British RAF pilots of the Second World War and commanded the Dambusters operation during the night of 16-17 May 1943.
During this mission specially developed ‘bouncing bombs’ were used against the German Möhne, Eder and Sorpe dams.
The photographs measure approximately 18 x 13 cm and also bear ‘TopFoto’ stamps on the reverse.
An interesting pair of original British WWII aerial photographs connected with one of the most famous RAF bombing operations of the Second World War.

Originele Britse WWII luchtfoto’s met betrekking tot de beroemde Dambusters-aanval van RAF No. 617 Squadron op de Duitse dammen in mei 1943

De twee foto’s tonen vanuit de lucht gefotografeerde dammen en het omliggende landschap na de beroemde Operation Chastise.
Op de achterzijde staat een oude handgeschreven identificatie met de titel ‘The Dam Busters’ en de vermelding van Guy Gibson (1918-1944), leider van RAF No. 617 Squadron tijdens de aanval.
Volgens deze tekst vloog Gibson tijdens de operatie laag over de Möhne- en Ederdam en ontving hij voor zijn optreden het Victoria Cross.
Guy Gibson was een van de bekendste Britse RAF-piloten uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog en voerde in de nacht van 16 op 17 mei 1943 het bevel over de Dambusters-operatie.
Tijdens deze missie werden speciaal ontwikkelde ‘bouncing bombs’ gebruikt tegen de Duitse Möhne-, Eder- en Sorpe-dammen.
De foto’s meten circa 18 x 13 cm en dragen op de achterzijde tevens stempels van ‘TopFoto’.
Een bijzonder paar originele Britse WWII luchtfoto’s verbonden aan een van de bekendste RAF-bombardementsoperaties van de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
