Original 1945-1949 Netherlands East Indies Indonesian Independence Propaganda Flyers – S.H. Spoor

100 €

Original collection of flyers and leaflets from the Netherlands East Indies dating from the Indonesian independence conflict between 1945 and 1949.
The documents represent different sides of the political and military conflict between the Netherlands and the Indonesian Republic and together form interesting historical source material from this period.
One of the larger documents carries the Dutch heading ‘Wapenbroeder’ and is dated Batavia, 17 December 1948.
This leaflet was issued by Lieutenant General and Army Commander S.H. Spoor and contains both Dutch and Indonesian text.
The message addresses Dutch servicemen and calls upon them to continue their task, stating that they were not a conquering force but bringers of justice and security.
The date of 17 December 1948 is historically significant as the document was issued shortly before the Second Police Action, Operation Kraai.
Also included is an Indonesian-language leaflet titled ‘Apakah Toean mengetahoei hal Indonesia?’, which critically discusses the Dutch presence and the information available about the situation in Indonesia.
The leaflet refers to subjects including Radio Djokja, Radio Singapore, Radio America, conditions in different Indonesian regions and Indonesian independence.
Another Indonesian leaflet discusses the Linggadjati Agreement and the proposed structure of the United States of Indonesia in relation to the Netherlands.
It contains several diagrams mentioning ‘Pemerintah Republik’, ‘Negara Indonesia Serikat’, ‘Pemerintah Belanda’, Borneo and Negara Indonesia Timoer.
The leaflet concludes with the call ‘BOEMI HANGOS!’ and the designation ‘PEMOEDA INDONESIA’.
An old handwritten Dutch annotation at the bottom states that this leaflet was found on trees in Salatiga.
Together the pieces illustrate how Dutch and Indonesian parties used printed material to inform and influence soldiers and civilians during the independence conflict.
The documents remain in used condition with original folds, discoloration, staining, punched holes, tears and areas of paper loss, particularly on the Indonesian Linggadjati leaflet.
A historically interesting group of 1945-1949 Netherlands East Indies documents relating directly to decolonisation, propaganda and the Indonesian independence conflict.
