Original German photograph from the Second World War, taken in The Hague during the German occupation of the Netherlands.
The photograph shows the entrance to a public air raid shelter with a Dutch sign reading ‘Openbare Schuilplaats – Alleen voor publiek op straat’.
The stairs lead down into the underground shelter intended to provide protection for civilians caught in the streets during an air raid.
The background shows a wartime street scene in The Hague including a cyclist, buildings and several wartime signs.
A sign for the ‘Geneeskundige Hulpdienst’, or Medical Aid Service, can also be seen on the right.

De foto toont de ingang van een openbare schuilplaats met daarboven het bord ‘Openbare Schuilplaats – Alleen voor publiek op straat’.
De trap leidt naar de ondergrondse schuilruimte die bedoeld was om burgers op straat tijdens een luchtaanval bescherming te bieden.
Op de achtergrond is het straatbeeld van Den Haag zichtbaar met onder andere een fietser, bebouwing en verschillende oorlogsgerelateerde aanduidingen.
Rechts is tevens een bord van de ‘Geneeskundige Hulpdienst’ zichtbaar.
