Original German photograph from the Second World War, taken in The Hague during the German occupation of the Netherlands.
The photograph shows the entrance of a shop or bakery with a large sign reading ‘Heden boterkoekjes (op bon)’, announcing that butter cookies were available on ration coupons.
The sign refers directly to the wartime rationing system under which many food products were only available in limited quantities upon presentation of the required ration coupons.
House number 600 is clearly visible beside the entrance.
