Original Korean War Dutch Veteran G.O. Talma 2nd Infantry Division Indianhead Plaque HNLMS Van Galen

Original wooden Korean War plaque originating from Dutch Korean War veteran G.O. Talma, assembled as a personal commemorative display with his military ribbon bars and insignia.
G.O. Talma, service number 31388, served with the Royal Netherlands Navy as a corporal radio-radar mechanic and served aboard HNLMS ‘Van Galen’ in the waters surrounding Korea during the Korean War.
The centre of the approximately 31 cm plaque features a large wooden five-pointed star carrying the famous ‘Indianhead’, the insignia of the US Army 2nd Infantry Division.
The 2nd Infantry Division played an important role during the Korean War and the Netherlands Detachment United Nations served under the division’s US 38th Infantry Regiment during the conflict.
The ‘Indianhead’ insignia therefore also became closely connected with the history of Dutch military involvement in Korea.
Several military ribbon bars are mounted above the central emblem, while a Combat Infantryman Badge is displayed underneath.
A compartment on the reverse retains two original personal award documents belonging to Talma.
The first document concerns the ‘Cross for Justice and Freedom’ with ‘Korea 1950’ clasp, awarded to G.O. Talma on 25 October 1951.
The second document concerns the ‘United Nations Service Medal’ with ‘Korea’ clasp, awarded for the period Talma served aboard HNLMS ‘Van Galen’ in Korean waters in the service of the United Nations.
This document is dated 14 September 1954 and records his name, rank, service number and the Dutch naval vessel aboard which he served.
The combination of the 2nd Infantry Division ‘Indianhead’, military insignia, ribbon bars and original named documents makes this a highly personal reminder of Dutch involvement in the Korean War.

Originele houten Korea-oorlog plaquette afkomstig van de Nederlandse Korea-veteraan G.O. Talma, uitgevoerd als persoonlijk herinneringsstuk

G.O. Talma, registratienummer 31388, diende bij de Koninklijke Marine als korporaal radio-radarmonteur en was tijdens de Korea-oorlog aan boord van Hr.Ms. ‘Van Galen’ actief in de wateren rond Korea.
Centraal op de circa 31 cm grote plaquette bevindt zich een grote houten vijfpuntige ster met daarop de bekende ‘Indianhead’, het embleem van de Amerikaanse 2nd Infantry Division.
De 2nd Infantry Division speelde een belangrijke rol tijdens de Korea-oorlog en het Nederlandse Detachement Verenigde Naties werd tijdens de strijd ingedeeld bij het Amerikaanse 38th Infantry Regiment van deze divisie.
Het ‘Indianhead’-embleem kreeg hierdoor eveneens een duidelijke betekenis binnen de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse inzet in Korea.
Boven het centrale embleem zijn verschillende militaire batons aangebracht en onderaan bevindt zich een Combat Infantryman Badge.
Op de achterzijde bevindt zich een vak waarin twee originele persoonlijke toekenningsdocumenten van Talma bewaard zijn gebleven.
Het eerste document betreft het ‘Kruis voor Recht en Vrijheid’ met de gesp ‘Korea 1950’, toegekend aan G.O. Talma op 25 oktober 1951.
Het tweede document betreft de ‘United Nations Service Medal’ met de gesp ‘Korea’, toegekend voor de periode die Talma aan boord van Hr.Ms. ‘Van Galen’ in de wateren rond Korea in dienst van de Verenigde Naties doorbracht.
Dit document is gedateerd 14 september 1954 en vermeldt zijn naam, rang, registratienummer en het Nederlandse marineschip waarop hij diende.
De combinatie van de 2nd Infantry Division ‘Indianhead’, militaire insignes, batons en originele naamgebonden documenten maakt dit een bijzonder persoonlijk herinneringsstuk aan de Nederlandse deelname aan de Korea-oorlog.
