Original 1815 Napoleonic Wars Silver Steckmedaille by Johann Thomas Stettner with Hand-Coloured Prints, Booklet & Original Case

Original silver Steckmedaille dating from 1815 by medallist Johann Thomas Stettner, issued to commemorate the end of the Napoleonic Wars and the events surrounding the defeat of Napoleon.
The obverse depicts the goddess of Peace holding a branch and cornucopia before a rural landscape with the inscription ‘HEIL DEM FRIEDEN! ER SEGNET REICH DIE ERDE’.
The reverse depicts an elaborate triumphal arch surmounted by a quadriga, the word ‘GLORIA’, the date 1815 and the inscription ‘EURE THATEN BEWUNDERN MILLIONEN’.
This unusual medal was created by Johann Thomas Stettner and belongs to the so-called Steckmedaillen or box medals, which could be opened to contain a series of small historical prints.
Included with this example are the original round hand-coloured prints depicting important events of 1815, including military scenes from the final phase of the Napoleonic Wars.
The series covers events including the Congress of Vienna, Napoleon’s escape from Elba and return to France, various military events and ultimately his exile to Saint Helena.
Also included is the original Dutch-language accompanying booklet entitled ‘Merkwaardigste oorlogsgebeurtenissen van het Jaar 1815’, describing the historical events depicted in the set.
A comparable example is documented with a 48-page accompanying booklet and coloured copper engravings.
The complete ensemble is preserved in its original book-shaped presentation case, decorated externally with coloured historical scenes and gilt ornamentation.
The combination of the silver medal, coloured historical prints, Dutch-language booklet and original presentation case makes this an exceptional collector’s piece from the Napoleonic era.

De voorzijde toont de godin van de vrede met een tak en hoorn des overvloeds voor een landelijk landschap met de tekst ‘HEIL DEM FRIEDEN! ER SEGNET REICH DIE ERDE’.
De keerzijde toont een rijk gedetailleerde triomfboog met quadriga, het woord ‘GLORIA’, het jaartal 1815 en het opschrift ‘EURE THATEN BEWUNDERN MILLIONEN’.
Deze bijzondere medaille werd vervaardigd door Johann Thomas Stettner en behoort tot de zogenaamde Steckmedaillen of doosmedailles, die geopend konden worden om een serie kleine historische prenten te bewaren.
Bij dit exemplaar bevinden zich de originele ronde, handgekleurde prenten met voorstellingen van belangrijke gebeurtenissen uit 1815, waaronder militaire scènes uit de laatste fase van de Napoleontische oorlogen.
De serie behandelt onder meer het Congres van Wenen, Napoleons ontsnapping van Elba en terugkeer naar Frankrijk, verschillende militaire gebeurtenissen en uiteindelijk zijn verbanning naar Sint-Helena.
Tevens aanwezig is het originele Nederlandstalige begeleidingsboekje met de titel ‘Merkwaardigste oorlogsgebeurtenissen van het Jaar 1815′, waarin de afgebeelde gebeurtenissen worden beschreven.
Een vergelijkbaar exemplaar wordt gedocumenteerd met een 48 pagina’s tellend begeleidingsboekje en gekleurde kopergravures.
Het complete ensemble wordt bewaard in het originele boekvormige foedraal, waarvan de buitenzijde is voorzien van gekleurde historische voorstellingen en goudkleurige decoraties.
De combinatie van de zilveren medaille, de gekleurde historische prenten, het Nederlandstalige boekje en het originele foedraal maakt dit tot een bijzonder verzamelobject uit de Napoleontische tijd.
