Original Austro-Hungarian War Medal 1873, known in German as the ‘Kriegsmedaille’.
This military decoration was instituted on 2 December 1873 by Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his reign.
The medal was intended for military personnel who had participated in one or more military campaigns since his accession to the throne in 1848.
The obverse depicts a right-facing portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I in military uniform surrounded by the inscription ‘FRANC IOS I D G IMP AVST REX BOH ETC ET REX AP HVNG’.
The reverse bears the inscription ‘SIGNUM MEMORIAE’ within a laurel and oak wreath, with the Roman dates ‘MDCCCXLVIII–MDCCCLXXIII’ representing 1848–1873 above.
The bronze medal is complete with its distinctive yellow and black Austro-Hungarian ribbon.
The original ribbon shows clear traces of wear and fraying as visible in the photographs.

Originele Oostenrijks-Hongaarse Oorlogsmedaille 1873, in het Duits bekend als de ‘Kriegsmedaille’
Deze onderscheiding werd op 2 december 1873 ingesteld door keizer Frans Jozef I van Oostenrijk ter gelegenheid van zijn 25-jarige regeringsjubileum.
De medaille werd bestemd voor militairen die sinds zijn troonsbestijging in 1848 aan een of meerdere militaire campagnes hadden deelgenomen.
Op de voorzijde staat het naar rechts gerichte portret van keizer Frans Jozef I in militair uniform met het opschrift ‘FRANC IOS I D G IMP AVST REX BOH ETC ET REX AP HVNG’.
De keerzijde draagt de tekst ‘SIGNUM MEMORIAE’ binnen een lauwer- en eikenkrans, met bovenaan de Romeinse jaartallen ‘MDCCCXLVIII–MDCCCLXXIII’ voor 1848–1873.
De bronzen medaille is voorzien van het kenmerkende geel-zwarte Oostenrijks-Hongaarse draaglint.
Het originele lint vertoont duidelijke gebruikssporen en rafeling, zoals zichtbaar op de foto’s.
