Original WW1 German army photo album Belgium and France – Westfront

Original German military photo album containing a total of 57 photographs from the First World War together with several photographs dating from the Second World War.
The album belonged to a German serviceman who served in the Imperial German Army during World War I.
The photographs provide an extensive personal record of his military service, including portraits, group photographs, officers, soldiers, billets and various moments behind and near the front.
An important part of the album consists of photographs showing the heavily devastated battlefield with flooded shell craters, churned-up ground, destroyed trees and remains of military positions.
Several photographs also show enormous explosions and artillery activity, including an impressive image of German soldiers observing a heavy artillery piece being fired.
Of particular interest is a clear photograph of a destroyed British rhomboid tank from the First World War with a German soldier standing beside the vehicle.
Other photographs show destroyed buildings, piles of debris and soldiers standing among the remains of devastated positions.
One photograph shows German soldiers at the railway station of Sinceny in France, providing a clearly identifiable location on the Western Front.
Sinceny is situated in the Aisne department and was located in an area that experienced extensive military operations during the First World War.
Another photograph is a military portrait bearing the handwritten date ‘1917’.
The album also contains several excellent portraits of the same serviceman in uniform, both individually and together with fellow German soldiers and during periods of rest.
More personal photographs show him together with a woman at a residence and seated at a table on a veranda.
These images make the album not only a record of military service but also a personal document of the serviceman’s life during this period.
Remarkably, the military career of the original owner appears to have extended beyond the First World War.
The album contains three photographs dating from the Second World War showing German Wehrmacht personnel.
These include large group photographs of Wehrmacht soldiers and officers, indicating that the compiler or original owner also served again in the German military during World War II.
The album therefore covers two important periods of German military history.
The combination of 57 photographs, battlefield destruction, artillery, a destroyed British tank, Sinceny, military portraits and later World War II photographs makes this an extensive historical photographic record.

Origineel WW1 Duits militair fotoalbum met in totaal 57 foto’s uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog en enkele foto’s uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog – België en Frankrijk 

Het album behoorde toe aan een Duitse militair die tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog in het Duitse Keizerlijke leger diende.
De foto’s geven een uitgebreid persoonlijk beeld van zijn militaire dienst, met portretten, groepsfoto’s, officieren, manschappen, verblijfplaatsen en verschillende momenten achter en nabij het front.
Een belangrijk gedeelte bestaat uit opnamen van het zwaar verwoeste frontlandschap met ondergelopen granaattrechters, omgewoelde aarde, vernielde bomen en resten van stellingen.
Daarnaast zijn verschillende foto’s aanwezig van enorme explosies en artilleriebeschietingen, waaronder een opname waarop Duitse militairen een zwaar artilleriestuk tijdens het vuren bekijken.
Bijzonder is een duidelijke foto van een vernietigde Britse ruitvormige tank uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog, waarbij een Duitse militair naast het voertuig staat.
Ook bevinden zich in het album foto’s van vernielde gebouwen, puinhopen en militairen die tussen de resten van een verwoeste positie staan.
Een van de foto’s toont Duitse militairen bij het station van Sinceny in Frankrijk, waarmee een concrete locatie aan het Westelijk Front kan worden vastgesteld.
Sinceny ligt in het departement Aisne en bevond zich tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog in een gebied waar langdurig en hevig werd gevochten.
Een andere opname toont een militair portret met het handgeschreven jaartal ‘1917’.
Het album bevat daarnaast meerdere fraaie portretten van dezelfde militair in uniform, zowel individueel als samen met andere Duitse militairen en tijdens rustmomenten.
Ook zijn meer persoonlijke opnamen aanwezig waarop hij samen met een vrouw bij een woning en aan een tafel op een veranda is afgebeeld.
Hierdoor vormt het album niet alleen een verslag van de oorlog, maar ook van het persoonlijke leven van de militair tijdens deze periode.
Opvallend is dat de militaire loopbaan van de oorspronkelijke eigenaar zich waarschijnlijk niet tot de Eerste Wereldoorlog beperkte.
In het album bevinden zich namelijk drie foto’s uit de periode van de Tweede Wereldoorlog waarop Duitse Wehrmachtmilitairen zijn afgebeeld.
Daaronder bevinden zich grote groepsfoto’s met Wehrmachtmilitairen en officieren, waardoor duidelijk wordt dat de samensteller of oorspronkelijke eigenaar ook tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog opnieuw in Duitse militaire dienst was.
Hiermee bestrijkt het fotoalbum twee belangrijke perioden uit de Duitse militaire geschiedenis.
De combinatie van 57 foto’s, frontopnamen, verwoestingen, artillerie, een vernietigde Britse tank, Sinceny, militaire portretten en de latere Tweede Wereldoorlog-foto’s maakt dit een uitgebreid historisch fotoalbum.
Een bijzonder origineel militair fotoalbum voor de verzamelaar van Duitse Eerste Wereldoorlog fotografie, het Westelijk Front en Duitse militaire geschiedenis.
