Original and exceptionally large estate from the Italian Fascist School ‘Nazario Sauro’ in Heerlen, Limburg, dating from the 1930s and the Second World War.
The school opened in 1932 and formed part of the network of Italian schools established by the Fascist regime to preserve Italian language, culture and nationalist ideology among Italian communities abroad.
This extensive archive provides a rare and remarkably complete insight into the Italian community in the former Eastern Mining District of the Netherlands.
The collection includes multiple certificates, brochures, educational material, school administration, pupil registers from Heerlen, Heerlerheide, Hoensbroek, Schaesberg, Spekholzerheide, Nieuwenhagen and surrounding towns, propaganda publications, posters, sheet music and official documents.
Included are unused certificates of the ‘Scuola Italiana Nazario Sauro’ in Heerlen bearing the stamp of the Italian school and the Royal Italian Consular Agency.
Also present are detailed pupil lists containing names of children from the region together with dates of birth, places of birth, school results and evaluations from the 1941-1942 school year.
The archive also contains the handwritten annual curriculum for the fifth grade during the 1941-1942 school year.
Several Fascist publications issued by the G.I.L. (Gioventù Italiana del Littorio), the Fasci Italiani all’Estero and the Partito Nazionale Fascista are included.
Among the material are gymnastics posters, propaganda brochures, songbooks, sheet music, publications relating to the Italian conquest of Ethiopia, youth literature, diplomas and educational publications.
Documents issued by the Fasci Italiani all’Estero, the organisation supervising Italian communities abroad under the Fascist regime, are likewise present.
The Italian community in Heerlen mainly consisted of miners employed in the Limburg coal mines.
By 1930, 226 Italians were already living in Heerlen, after which the school was established for the education of their children.
Although closely connected to Fascist ideology, many Italian families enrolled their children because the education was free and considerable political pressure was exerted by the Italian authorities.
During the Second World War the position of the Italian community in the Netherlands changed significantly, making this archive an important historical source documenting everyday life of Italian families in Limburg.
An exceptionally large set of museum quality that has rarely survived as one intact collection.

Origineel Jaren 30 – WWII Italiaans nalatenschap van de Italiaanse Fascistische school in Heerlen in Limburg

Origineel en uitzonderlijk groot nalatenschap afkomstig van de Italiaanse Fascistische School ‘Nazario Sauro’ te Heerlen in Limburg, daterend uit de jaren dertig en de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
De school werd geopend in 1932 en maakte deel uit van het netwerk van Italiaanse scholen dat door het fascistische regime werd opgericht om de Italiaanse taal, cultuur en nationalistische ideologie onder Italiaanse emigranten levend te houden.
Dit omvangrijke ensemble biedt een zeldzaam en vrijwel compleet inkijkje in de werking van de Italiaanse gemeenschap binnen de Oostelijke Mijnstreek.
Het lot bevat onder meer meerdere oorkondes, brochures, lesmateriaal, schooladministratie, namenlijsten van leerlingen uit Heerlen, Heerlerheide, Hoensbroek, Schaesberg, Spekholzerheide, Nieuwenhagen en omliggende plaatsen, propaganda-uitgaven, posters, bladmuziek en officiële documenten.
Aanwezig zijn blanco certificaten van de ‘Scuola Italiana Nazario Sauro’ te Heerlen, voorzien van de stempel van de Italiaanse school en de Koninklijke Italiaanse Consulaire Vertegenwoordiging.
Daarnaast bevinden zich uitgebreide namenlijsten van kinderen uit de regio met persoonsgegevens, geboortedata, geboorteplaatsen, schoolresultaten en beoordelingen uit het schooljaar 1941-1942.
De verzameling omvat tevens het handgeschreven jaarprogramma van de vijfde klas voor het schooljaar 1941-1942.
Verder bevat het lot diverse fascistische publicaties van de G.I.L. (Gioventù Italiana del Littorio), de Fasci Italiani all’Estero en de Partito Nazionale Fascista.
Onder de aanwezige stukken bevinden zich onder andere gymnastiekposters, propagandabrochures, liedboeken, bladmuziek, uitgaven over de Italiaanse verovering van Ethiopië, jeugdlectuur, diploma’s en educatief materiaal.
Ook zijn documenten aanwezig van de ‘Fasci Italiani all’Estero’, de organisatie die Italiaanse gemeenschappen buiten Italië onder toezicht van het fascistische regime organiseerde.
De Italiaanse gemeenschap in Heerlen bestond grotendeels uit mijnwerkers die werkzaam waren in de Limburgse mijnen.
In 1930 woonden reeds 226 Italianen in Heerlen, waarna de school werd opgericht om hun kinderen Italiaans onderwijs te geven.
Hoewel de school sterk verbonden was met de fascistische staatsideologie, kozen veel Italiaanse gezinnen voor deze gratis opleiding, mede door sociale en politieke druk vanuit het regime.
Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog veranderde de positie van de Italiaanse gemeenschap in Nederland ingrijpend, waardoor dit archief tevens een belangrijk historisch document vormt over het dagelijks leven van Italiaanse gezinnen in Limburg.
Een uitzonderlijke set dat als één geheel bewaard is gebleven.
Een belangrijk onderzoeksobject voor verzamelaars van Italiaanse fascistische geschiedenis, Limburgse regionale geschiedenis, propaganda en de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
