Original Pre 1940 Dutch/French ‘Luchtvaartafdeeling’ flight helmet Vliegerhelm

Original leather flight helmet originating from the French Air Force from the period before 1940.
This type of aviation helmet was not only used by French pilots but was also worn by pilots of the Dutch Luchtvaartafdeeling in the years before and during the German invasion of 1940.
The helmet was designed for use in open cockpit aircraft during the early period of military aviation.
Integrated ear cups with ventilation openings are present on the sides allowing communication and the use of early radio or headset systems.
The interior features a padded lining that provided protection and comfort during long high altitude flights.
The multi panel leather construction ensures a close fit around the head while protecting the pilot against wind and cold temperatures.
The helmet includes an adjustable chin strap to keep it securely in place during flight.
During the 1930s aviation equipment was often shared or adopted between European air forces.
For this reason French flight helmets were also used by pilots of the Dutch Luchtvaartafdeeling during the mobilisation period of 1939–1940.
The design clearly reflects the functional and robust character of early military aviation equipment from the interwar period.

Originele Pre 1940 Nederlandse/Franse ‘Luchtvaartafdeeling’ vliegerhelm 

Originele leren vliegerhelm afkomstig uit de Franse luchtmacht uit de periode vóór 1940.
Dit type vliegerhelm werd naast Franse piloten ook gedragen door piloten van de Nederlandse Luchtvaartafdeeling in de jaren vóór en tijdens de Duitse inval van 1940.
De helm werd ontworpen voor gebruik in open cockpit vliegtuigen tijdens de beginperiode van de militaire luchtvaart.
Aan de zijkanten bevinden zich geïntegreerde oorstukken met ventilatieopeningen voor communicatie en het dragen van vroege radio- of koptelefoonsystemen.
De binnenzijde is voorzien van een gewatteerde voering die bescherming en comfort bood tijdens lange vluchten op hoogte.
De constructie met meerdere leren panelen zorgt voor een goede pasvorm rond het hoofd en extra bescherming tegen wind en kou.
De helm beschikt over een verstelbare kinband voor een stabiele en veilige bevestiging tijdens het vliegen.
In de jaren dertig werd vliegersuitrusting binnen Europese luchtmachten vaak uitgewisseld of gezamenlijk ontwikkeld.
Hierdoor werden Franse vliegerhelmen ook gebruikt door piloten van de Nederlandse Luchtvaartafdeeling vóór en tijdens de mobilisatieperiode van 1939–1940.
Het ontwerp weerspiegelt duidelijk de functionele en robuuste stijl van vroege militaire luchtvaartuitrusting uit het interbellum.
