Original WWII VEF Minox Riga subminiature espionage camera

Original VEF Minox Riga subminiature camera (1938–1943), an iconic piece of photographic and espionage history from the Second World War. This example dates to 1941 and belongs to the earliest generation of Minox cameras, designed by Walter Zapp and produced by VEF (Valsts Elektrotehniskā Fabrika) in Riga, Latvia.

The Minox Riga, also known as the Minox I, was the very first commercially sold subminiature camera by Minox and was produced from 1938 to 1943, during the turbulent war years when the factory successively fell under Soviet and German control.

Thanks to its pocket-sized format, ingenious sliding mechanism (opening automatically cocks the camera and prepares it for shooting), shutter speeds from 1/2 to 1/1000 second, and a viewfinder with parallax correction, this early model already featured nearly all the characteristics that later made Minox world-famous. The body is made of stainless steel, making the Riga more robust and slightly heavier than later aluminium Minox cameras, and easily recognizable by its distinctive shiny finish.

This example comes with the original box, leather case, and Minox passport/warranty booklet with serial number, accessories that are extremely rare today. Many Minox Riga cameras have become separated from their original accessories over time; a complete surviving set like this is seldom offered.

Originele VEF Minox Riga subminiature camera (1938–1943), een iconisch stuk fotografische en spionagegeschiedenis uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Dit exemplaar dateert uit 1941 en behoort tot de vroegste generatie Minox-camera’s, ontworpen door Walter Zapp en geproduceerd door VEF (Valsts Elektrotehniskā Fabrika) in Riga, Letland. De Minox Riga, ook bekend als de Minox I, was de allereerste commercieel verkochte subminiatuurcamera van Minox en werd geproduceerd van 1938 tot 1943, midden in de turbulente oorlogsjaren waarin de fabriek achtereenvolgens onder Sovjet- en Duitse controle kwam te staan. Dankzij het compacte zakformaat, het ingenieuze schuifmechanisme (openen = automatisch spannen en klaar voor opname), de sluitertijden van 1/2 tot 1/1000 seconde en de zoeker met parallaxcorrectie bevatte dit vroege model al vrijwel alle kenmerken die Minox later wereldberoemd maakten. De behuizing is vervaardigd uit roestvrij staal, waardoor de Riga robuuster en iets zwaarder is dan latere aluminium Minox-camera’s, maar ook herkenbaar aan zijn kenmerkende glanzende afwerking. Dit exemplaar wordt geleverd met de originele doos, lederen hoes en het Minox-paspoort/garantieboekje met serienummer, accessoires die tegenwoordig uitzonderlijk zeldzaam zijn. Veel Minox Riga camera’s zijn in de loop der tijd losgeraakt van hun originele toebehoren; een compleet bewaard gebleven set zoals deze wordt nog maar zelden aangeboden. De werking is niet getest. De Minox Riga geldt wereldwijd als de legendarische “spioncamera” en is tegenwoordig een zeer gezocht verzamelobject voor liefhebbers van spionagegeschiedenis, subminiatuurcamera’s, Tweede Wereldoorlog-memorabilia en vintage fotografie.
