Original WWII Dutch estate of the Police Commissioner of Weert (Limburg)

This extensive and historically highly significant Dutch Police estate originates from the Police Commissioner of Weert, Antoon Jacobus Wilhelmus Josephs, and relates to his career in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Eindhoven and Weert during the period 1926–1945. The ensemble forms an exceptional, personal archive that provides a compelling insight into the position of a senior police official during the Second World War.

At the core of the group is the “schuldboekje” (account book) of the Nederlandsche Politie in Weert, issued in the name of ‘Opperluitenant’ A.J.W. Josephs, containing administrative entries from 1943 relating to uniform and equipment items.

Also included is an official notification from the Municipality of Weert dated 18 January 1945 concerning his pension as Oberleutnant of Police, retroactively effective from 1 July 1944. The archive further contains documents from the Municipal Police of ’s-Hertogenbosch and correspondence from Eindhoven, including a letter dated 10 February 1943 relating to police training.

A particularly striking document is the German-language letter dated 29 October 1943, sent from Eindhoven (Parklaan 52) and addressed to “Herr Oberleutnant der Polizei Josephs in Weert,” issued by the Sicherheitspolizei. This document explicitly refers to the “SS-Wachbataillon in Vught” (Camp Vught), thereby documenting the administrative link between the local police in Weert and German security authorities. The letter is dated 29 October 1943 and signed by a “Major der Gendarmerie.”

Furthermore, the archive includes a police diploma issued in ’s-Hertogenbosch on 28 September 1926 by the R.K. Politiebond St. Michael, certifying that Antoon Jacobus Wilhelmus Josephs, born in St. Hubert (municipality of Mill) on 21 April 1906, possessed the required professional qualifications for his office. Also present are: a Second Distribution Registration Card (listing the address Looimansgilde in Weert), a Certificate of Dutch Nationality issued in Born on 19 January 1938, a Prisoner of War Post / Kriegsgefangenenpost card referencing Stalag number 77.006459 and the camp at Northwich (Great Britain), as well as various photographs and administrative papers.

The archive also contains correspondence from the Municipality of Weert, Public Works Department, dated 10 June 1944 concerning the Clearance and Restoration Service, along with several internal police forms and service-related documents from 1943 and 1944.

The combination of Dutch and German-language documents, with specific dates such as 26 October 1943, 29 October 1943, 10 February 1943 and 18 January 1945, makes this archive a chronologically coherent and well-documented whole.

The documents remain in authentic condition, showing signs of age and use such as folds, discoloration, rust stains and light moisture marks, consistent with a personally preserved wartime file.

Dit omvangrijke en historisch zeer interessante Nederlandse Politie-nalatenschap is afkomstig van de Politiecommissaris van Weert, Antoon Jacobus Wilhelmus Josephs en heeft betrekking op zijn loopbaan in onder meer ’s-Hertogenbosch, Eindhoven en Weert in de periode 1926–1945. Het ensemble vormt een uitzonderlijk en persoonsgebonden archief dat een indringend beeld geeft van de positie van een hogere politiefunctionaris tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
Centraal binnen de groep bevindt zich het schuldboekje van de Nederlandsche Politie te Weert, op naam van opperluitenant A.J.W. Josephs, met administratieve aantekeningen uit 1943 betreffende uniform- en uitrustingsstukken.
Daarnaast is er een officiële kennisgeving van de Gemeente Weert d.d. 18 januari 1945 inzake zijn pensioen als opperluitenant van politie, met terugwerkende kracht per 1 juli 1944.
Ook aanwezig zijn stukken van Gemeentepolitie ’s-Hertogenbosch en correspondentie uit Eindhoven, waaronder een brief van 10 februari 1943 met betrekking tot een politie-opleiding. Een bijzonder indringend document is de Duitstalige brief van 29 oktober 1943, verzonden vanuit Eindhoven (Parklaan 52), gericht aan “Herr Oberleutnant der Polizei Josephs in Weert”, afkomstig van de zijde van de Sicherheitspolizei. In dit stuk wordt expliciet verwezen naar het “SS-Wachbataillon in Vught” (Kamp Vught), waarmee de administratieve lijn tussen de lokale politie in Weert en Duitse veiligheidsinstanties wordt gedocumenteerd. De combinatie van Nederlandse en Duitstalige stukken, met concrete data zoals 26 oktober 1943, 29 oktober 1943, 10 februari 1943 en 18 januari 1945, maakt dit archief tot een chronologisch goed te volgen geheel. De documenten verkeren in authentieke staat met gebruiks- en ouderdomssporen zoals vouwen, verkleuring, roestvlekken en lichte vochtschade, passend bij een persoonlijk bewaard dossier uit de oorlogsjaren. Een uitzonderlijk en uitgebreid persoonsarchief voor de verzamelaar van Nederlandse politiegeschiedenis, bezettingsdocumentatie en Tweede Wereldoorlog documenten.
