Original 1938 German death card dismantling of Czechoslovakia

Unusual and satirical mourning print from October 1938, designed in the form of an official death announcement complete with black mourning border and matching envelope.

This printed piece was produced in response to the events surrounding the Munich Agreement and the dismantling of Czechoslovakia.

At its center is the symbolic “death notice” of “Tschechoslowakei,” allegedly deceased on 1 October 1938 “after long, agonizing suffering,” with references to the role of the German Wehrmacht and political leaders of the period. The text mentions names such as Gottwald, Dimitroff, and Syrový, as well as Litvinov-Finkelstein (Stalin) and the League of Nations (Der Völkerbund), giving the pamphlet a distinctly political and propagandistic character. Geneva (Genf) is stated as the place of issue, serving as a symbolic reference to international diplomacy.

The piece is printed in Gothic typeface and framed with a black mourning border, closely resembling an authentic funeral announcement. The accompanying black-bordered envelope is also present.

This document represents a characteristic example of politically charged propaganda and satirical print from the lead-up to the Second World War. Origineel 1938 Duits bidprentje ontmanteling van Tsjechoslowakije

Bijzonder en satirisch rouwdrukwerk uit oktober 1938, vormgegeven als een officiële overlijdensadvertentie met bijpassende rouwrand en envelop. Dit drukwerk is opgesteld naar aanleiding van de gebeurtenissen rond het Verdrag van München en de ontmanteling van Tsjechoslowakije. Centraal staat de symbolische “overlijdensaankondiging” van “Tschechoslowakei”, zogenaamd overleden op 1 oktober 1938 “na langen, qualvollen Leiden”, met verwijzingen naar de rol van de Duitse Wehrmacht en politieke leiders uit die periode. In de tekst worden onder meer namen genoemd als Gottwald, Dimitroff, Syrový, evenals Litwinow-Finkelstein (Stalin) en Der Völkerbund (Volkenbond), wat het pamflet een duidelijk politiek en propagandistisch karakter geeft. Als plaats van uitgifte wordt Genf (Genève) vermeld, eveneens een symbolische verwijzing naar de internationale diplomatie.
