Original WWII Flemish Volksverwering brochure ‘Staalharde Feiten voor het Nationaalsocialisme tegen het Bolsjewisme’

This very rare brochure Staalharde Feiten voor het Nationaalsocialisme tegen het Bolsjewisme was published in 1940 by Uitgeverij “Volksverwering” in Antwerp and is a strongly propagandistic printed work from the early years of the German occupation of Belgium during the Second World War. The publication originates from Volksverwering, a Flemish far-right organization that actively collaborated with the German occupiers and was also a collaboration movement in Belgium.

The text was written by Ir. Dipl. Ing. J. van Roessel and presents itself as a so-called factual analysis, but in reality consists of radical National Socialist, antisemitic and anti-Bolshevik propaganda. The brochure explicitly defends German National Socialism and is ideologically closely aligned with German wartime propaganda, including references to the invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 and the concept of so-called “Judeo-Bolshevism.”

The foreword, dated December 1940, demonstrates the purpose of the publication as an instrument of ideological influence under occupation conditions. During the occupation, Volksverwering actively cooperated with German authorities, disseminated propaganda with their approval, and contributed to the legitimization of antisemitic measures and persecution. This brochure is a notable example of that collaboration and illustrates how collaborating organizations used printed material as a weapon in the ideological war.

In terms of design, the publication is highly representative of the 1939–1941 period, featuring a striking modernist cover design in red, black and grey, with clear National Socialist symbolism. The brochure was printed by Drukkerij “Graphicolor” in Antwerp and consists of 31 pages.

Deze zeer zeldzame brochure Staalharde Feiten voor het Nationaalsocialisme tegen het Bolsjewisme werd uitgegeven in 1940 door Uitgeverij “Volksverwering” te Antwerpen en is een uitgesproken propagandistisch drukwerk uit de vroege bezettingsjaren van België tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De publicatie is afkomstig van Volksverwering, een Vlaamse extreemrechtse organisatie die actief samenwerkte met de Duitse bezetter en tevens een collaboratie beweging in België was. De tekst is geschreven door Ir. Dipl. Ing. J. van Roessel en presenteert zich als een zogenaamd feitelijke analyse, maar bestaat in werkelijkheid uit radicale nationaalsocialistische, antisemitische en anti-bolsjewistische propaganda.
