Original Cold War era German DDR large flag

This large-format East German DDR flag, measuring 235 x 125 cm, was manufactured by VEB Bandtex in the former German Democratic Republic.
The flag features the official state emblem used from 1959 until the dissolution of the GDR in 1990: the hammer representing the working class, the compass symbolizing the intelligentsia, and the wreath of rye standing for the farming community.
Together, they embodied the socialist ideal of unity between labor, knowledge, and agriculture.
The flag is double-sided, as was customary for flags intended for government buildings, party events, and national ceremonies.

Deze Duitse grootformaat DDR-vlag van 235 x 125 cm werd vervaardigd door VEB Bandtex in de voormalige Duitse Democratische Republiek. De vlag draagt het officiële staatswapen dat vanaf 1959 tot de opheffing van de DDR in 1990 werd gebruikt: de hamer voor de arbeidersklasse, de passer voor de intelligentsia en de korenkrans die de boerenstand symboliseert. Samen vormden zij het socialistische ideaal van eenheid tussen arbeid, kennis en landbouw. Het doek is dubbelzijdig uitgevoerd, zoals gebruikelijk bij vlaggen die bedoeld waren voor overheidsgebouwen, partijbijeenkomsten en nationale ceremonies.
