Original Dutch Pre 1940 documents Order of Orange-Nassau with swords to the German colonel H. Ribstein, commander of Infantry Regiment 12

The two original documents date from 1939 and concern the awarding of the Order of Orange-Nassau with swords to the German colonel H. Ribstein, commander of Infantry Regiment 12, who was later promoted to general during the war.
The first document, drawn up in The Hague on 9 October 1939, is an official decree by Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands.
In it, Ribstein is appointed Commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau with swords.
The document explicitly refers to Wilhelmina and is co-signed by the Minister of Defence A.Q.H. Dijxhoorn and the Minister of Foreign Affairs E.N. van Kleffens, as well as by officials of the Queen’s Cabinet.
The second document, dated 4 and 5 December 1939, originates from the stellvertretendes Generalkommando XI. Armeekorps in Hanover.
It confirms the receipt of the award and outlines the administrative processing.
References are made to enclosures such as the order, the certificate, and the statutes.
Both documents contain typewritten text, stamps, and handwritten notes, and display typical signs of age and spotting.
Together, these documents form a remarkable and historically valuable archival set.

An interesting item, because while the Netherlands was mobilized and the bunkers were facing the German border, a Dutch decoration was nevertheless awarded to a German officer!

De twee originele documenten dateren uit 1939 en hebben betrekking op de toekenning van de Orde van Oranje-Nassau met zwaarden aan de Duitse kolonel H. Ribstein, commandant van Infanterieregiment 12, die later in de oorlog tot generaal werd bevorderd. Het eerste document, opgesteld in Den Haag op 9 oktober 1939, is een officieel besluit van Koningin Wilhelmina der Nederlanden.
Hierin wordt Ribstein benoemd tot Commandeur in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau met de zwaarden.
Het stuk verwijst expliciet naar Wilhelmina en is medeondertekend door de Minister van Defensie A.Q.H. Dijxhoorn en de Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken E.N. van Kleffens, evenals door functionarissen van het Kabinet der Koningin.
Het tweede document, gedateerd 4 en 5 december 1939, is afkomstig van het stellvertretendes Generalkommando XI. Armeekorps in Hannover.
Daarin wordt de ontvangst van de onderscheiding bevestigd en de administratieve afhandeling geregeld.
Er wordt verwezen naar bijlagen zoals de orde, de oorkonde en de statuten.
Beide stukken bevatten typemachineletters, stempels en handgeschreven aantekeningen.
Samen vormen deze documenten een bijzonder en historisch waardevol item.
Ze weerspiegelen niet alleen de diplomatieke praktijk van het decoreren van buitenlandse officieren in de aanloop naar de Tweede Wereldoorlog, maar tonen ook de persoonlijke betrokkenheid van Koningin Wilhelmina en het vroege militaire carrièrepad van Ribstein, die later generaal zou worden.
Een interessant item omdat terwijl Nederland gemobiliseerd was en de bunkers richting de Duitse grens gericht waren werd er toch nog een Nederlandse onderscheiding uitgereikt aan een Duitse officier!
