Original WWII German American bund pin for the Deutscher Volksstag – Mittelwest Gautreffen in Chicago

This original metal commemorative badge/pin comes from the German American Bund and was issued for the Deutscher Volksstag – Mittelwest Gautreffen in Chicago, held on July 24 and 25, 1938.
The oval, shield-shaped design features a stylized swastika with a burst of rays, flanked by the years 19 and 38. At the bottom, “Chicago” and the event date are clearly displayed.
The badge was worn by participants and sympathizers during this major Midwest gathering of the American Bund, a pro-Nazi organization active in the United States during the 1930s that combined Hitler’s ideology with an American patriotic image.
The reverse still retains its original functional pin attachment.

The Bund presented itself as both patriotic and American, but openly embraced the ideology and symbolism of Adolf Hitler’s Germany.
The organization held parades, youth camps, and mass rallies, often displaying both the American flag and the swastika.
The most famous example was the rally at Madison Square Garden in New York in 1939, where 20,000 people gathered under portraits of George Washington alongside Nazi symbols.
Although the Bund tried to win support by presenting itself as “patriotic,” it faced strong opposition from the American public. After Kuhn’s arrest in 1939 and the United States’ entry into World War II, the movement quickly collapsed. By 1941, the Bund had ceased to exist.

Deze originele metalen herdenkingsspeld is afkomstig van de German American Bund en werd uitgegeven ter gelegenheid van het Deutscher Volksstag – Mittelwest Gautreffen in Chicago, gehouden op 24 en 25 juli 1938.
Het ovale schildvormige ontwerp toont een gestileerde swastika met stralenkrans, geflankeerd door de jaartallen 19 en 38.
Onderaan staat duidelijk Chicago en de datum van het evenement.
De speld werd gedragen door deelnemers en sympathisanten tijdens deze grote Midwest-bijeenkomst van de American Bund, een pro-nazistische organisatie die in de jaren ’30 in de Verenigde Staten actief was en de ideologie van Hitler combineerde met een Amerikaans patriottisch imago.
Aan de achterzijde is nog de originele functionele draagspeld aanwezig.
