Original WWII Dutch Schalkhaar Politie helmet

This Dutch helmet is in good condition and was worn during the Second World War by a member of the Schalkhaar Police.
It is presumed that the police officer continued his service shortly after the war in the National Police Corps (Korps Rijkspolitie).
The helmet is complete with liner and chinstrap.
This helmet is a good example of how an officer or the helmet was used during the war at the Schalkhaar Police and after the war by the National Police.
Although many of the agents trained at Schalkhaar were dismissed from their positions after the war, there are known cases of former Schalkhaarders who nonetheless ended up or returned in the National Police.
This makes it a sensitive and controversial subject within Dutch post-war history.

Schalkhaar Police

The Schalkhaar Police was a special police training program established during the Second World War by the German occupiers in the village of Schalkhaar, near Deventer.
In 1941, the Police Training Battalion (Politie Opleidings Bataljon, or P.O.B.) was based in the Westenberg Barracks.
Here, Dutch officers were trained under the supervision of the SS, with a strong emphasis on physical training, discipline, and National Socialist indoctrination rather than standard police duties.
The trainees quickly became known as “Schalkhaarders,” a term that acquired a negative connotation during and after the war.
Many of them were involved in the deportation of Jews, the repression of the resistance, and other forms of collaboration with the German occupiers.
The term “Schalkhaar Police” has since remained a symbol of collaboration within the police during the occupation years — a painful but important chapter in Dutch history.

Deze Nederlandse helm is in goede conditie en werd tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog gedragen door een lid van de Schalkhaar Politie. Vermoedelijk is de politieagent vlak na de oorlog doorgegaan in het Korps Rijkspolitie. De helm is compleet met binnenwerk en kinriem
Deze helm is een goed voorbeeld van hoe een agent of de helm tijdens de oorlog bij Schalkhaar werd gebruikt en na de oorlog bij de Rijkspolitie.
Hoewel velen van de Schalkhaar-opgeleide agenten na de oorlog uit hun functie werden gezet, zijn er ook gevallen bekend van oud-Schalkhaarders die alsnog of opnieuw terechtkwamen bij de Rijkspolitie.
Dit maakt het een gevoelig en controversieel onderwerp binnen de Nederlandse naoorlogse geschiedenis.

Schalkhaar Politie 

De Schalkhaar Politie was een speciale politieopleiding die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd opgezet door de Duitse bezetter in het dorp Schalkhaar, bij Deventer. In de Westenbergkazerne werd in 1941 het Politie Opleidings Bataljon (P.O.B.) gevestigd. Hier werden Nederlandse agenten opgeleid onder toezicht van de SS, met een sterke nadruk op fysieke training, discipline en nationaalsocialistische indoctrinatie, in plaats van op gewone politietaken. De cursisten werden al snel bekend als “Schalkhaarders”, een term die tijdens en na de oorlog een negatieve bijklank kreeg. Velen van hen werkten mee aan deportaties van Joden, repressie van het verzet en andere vormen van collaboratie met de Duitse bezetter. De term “Schalkhaar Politie” is sindsdien blijven bestaan als symbool voor collaboratie binnen de politie tijdens de bezettingsjaren – een pijnlijk, maar belangrijk hoofdstuk in de Nederlandse geschiedenis.
