Original WWII German photo set Eben-Emael in May 1940

This German photo set is in good condition and concerns 22 photos which were taken in May 1940 just after the capture of the Belgian fort Eben-Emael.
The dimensions of the photos vary, the smallest is 5.5 x 4.5 cm and the largest is 9 x 6.5 cm.
The capture of Fort Eben-Emael took place on May 10, 1940, during the German attack on Belgium at the beginning of World War II. The fort, located near the Belgian border with the Netherlands, was considered an impregnable fortress and played a key role in the defense of the Albert Canal.
The German attack was revolutionary: a small unit of German airborne troops (Fallschirmjäger) landed gliders directly on the roof of the fort.
They took out the main gun turrets and defense points with explosives and flamethrowers within hours.
The surprise was total and on May 11 the fort surrendered.
The operation was an example of new Blitzkrieg tactics and represented a psychological blow to the Allies.

Deze Duitse foto set is in goede conditie en het betreft 22 foto’s welke gemaakt werden in mei 1940 vlak na de inname van het Belgische fort Eben-Emael.
De afmetingen van de foto’s variëren, de kleinste is 5,5 x 4,5 cm en de grootste is 9 x 6,5 cm.
De inname van fort Eben-Emael vond plaats op 10 mei 1940, tijdens de Duitse aanval op België aan het begin van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het fort, gelegen nabij de Belgische grens met Nederland, werd beschouwd als een onneembare vesting en speelde een sleutelrol in de verdediging van het Albertkanaal.
De Duitse aanval was revolutionair: een kleine eenheid Duitse luchtlandingstroepen (Fallschirmjäger) landde met zweefvliegtuigen direct op het dak van het fort.
Ze schakelden met explosieven en vlammenwerpers binnen enkele uren de belangrijkste geschutskoepels en verdedigingspunten uit.
De verrassing was totaal en op 11 mei gaf het fort zich over.
De operatie was een voorbeeld van nieuwe Blitzkrieg-tactieken en betekende een psychologische klap voor de geallieerden.
